Phase 4 focuses mainly on consonant blends/clusters and teaches no new sounds. It is important to teach children how to hear these sounds that are often missed out. The lessons in this phase also provide children with the opportunity to apply previous learning from the other two phases. The following five-day teaching sequence works through the initial and final double clusters separately and the initial and final triple clusters are taught together as there are so few. The last two days are for recapping all clusters.

These are the Tricky Words (or common exception words) that children are expected to read and correctly spell by the end of Phase 4. They are included discreetly into this Phase's planning.
